Happy New Year - A busy start to '09

I just haven't had the time to keep my page updated over the last 3 years or so but to get some of the name dropping out the way, I've had a great chat with Jeremy Paxman about the demise of quality programming, shared a warm moment with Ann Widdecombe,(that's all I'm telling you!) got a kiss from bad boy Russell Brand, a hug from David Attenborough, an argument with Mariella Frostrup (and Michael Grade and Mark Thomson.) a 'knowing' smile from Sharon Osborne (that's another story) and a goodie pack from one of Gok Wan's semi naked male friends - and most of these events happened in Edinburgh! What is the world coming to?

Now to the future.

I'm meeting our Israeli archaeologist shortly to discuss our next shoot (no distasteful pun intended!) in Israel later this year. Apart from completing The Daniel Project, we have an exciting series in development which explores some hitherto secret findings.watch this space!

I'll then be attending a major conference on the future of Scottish Broadcasting and in March I'm off to London again for top level discussions with all the British broadcasters to discuss the way forward with the challenges of HD - and the credit crunch. The former demands huge investment (we have spent large sums over the last few years to keep ahead with the technology) and the latter has caused massive budget cuts in the commissioning of programmes. This works well for us with (expensive) drama commissions being cut and (cheaper) documentaries on the increase. We are in talks to develop a number of exciting new projects - one of which fits in with this year's Homecoming Scotland already has international interest even though it isn't made yet! Such is (broadcasting) life.

Later in the year I'll be back in Cannes again to meet with the international players in cinema and TV and to sell our completed films.but before then I'll be catching up with friends and colleagues old and new at DocFest which this year amalgamates BritDoc - which I loved attending in Oxford every summer - and the Sheffield DocFest - which is held in November!

One of the other highlights of my year is the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Last year I was papped at the premier of The Edge of Love with my friend Carol McGregor who is exec producing The Petersen Files - our thriller movie based in Scotland. One of my chums had seen me on the telly getting out my limo and posing on the red carpet for the photographers - when I suddenly disappeared from view. Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller had moved in front of me and were standing side by side posing for the cameras - and apparently you could just see me behind them. The new sum is 1 Keira + 1 Sienna = 1 Deborah! Ah well, we'll start the diet on Monday.

I'll sign off now but you can catch me on Face Book when I get a chance to update it - and I'll leave some of my old news reports below for you to read - if you're interested!

Happy New Year - A busy start to '08

After a well deserved rest over the Christmas period the team at The Studio are back into a busy schedule. I have recently returned from a series of fruitful meetings with a number of broadcasters and industry organisations that was held over a number of days in Manchester.

In the next couple of days I will be travelling to the USA for a series of meetings over a number of weeks in regard to various projects we are working on.

Oxford: BritDoc 2008

I attended BritDoc again this year. Held at Keble College, Oxford (during the floods in 2007!) we ate in a Harry Potteresque 'Hogwarts' dining hall, attended master classes, watched fabulous international documentaries - and networked like crazy with other film professionals from around the world!

It was great to meet friends old and new - and I even experienced my first 'live' Morris Dancing (what's that all about?!). I only managed to watch two films - which both had me in tears. "We are Together" (Thina Simunye) by Paul Taylor which features South African orphans who try to escape their meagre existence through their music and the even more moving "Billy the Kid" by Jennifer Venditti who follows 15 year old Billy Price who is a bit 'different' to most if us. The scenes when he is trying to impress Heather the partially sighted girl he fancies will have you not knowing whether to laugh or cry! Superb stuff.

Documentaries are a vital part of British culture enabling us to understand, question and change the world around us. BritDoc is a network and a think-tank focusing on the future of the documentary business and is now set to be an annual 'must-do' for serious film makers.

Cannes: MipCom '07 and MipTV '08

Not long back from the South of France where we have been exibiting at MIPCOM, the global content event for co-producing, buying, selling, financing and distributing entertainment content across all platforms, which is in preparation for the Cannes Film Festival next year. We were one of 35 UK production companies that were presenting this year at the PACT stand, positioned between Warner Bros and Channel Four Films.

As it provides key decision-makers in the TV, film, digital an audio visual content, production and distribution industry with the only market conference and networking forum to discover future trends and trade content rights on a global level, I took a slate of factual programmes where one of my first of many meetings was shmoozing on the yacht owned by the bank of Ireland - Oh, what a hardship it was - but someone had to do it. Of course, you can view our MIPCOM Project Info leaflet (pdf). We had a tremendous reponse for our projects and made many important contacts which I will be disclosing later in the year.

Edinburgh: International Film Festival and The MediaGuardian International TV Festival '07

August is Edinburgh Festival month and I'm looking forward to both the Film and TV Festivals this year. (I'll also be at a few Book Festival events!) Highlights for me - other than again catching up with friends in the industry from all over the world - will be Jeremy Paxman giving the MacTaggart Lecture (yes, honest!) and the various master classes at both. I love to learn so master classes are a great way to be sure I'm up to date with what's happening in the industry even though The Studio is often in there leading the way!

Cannes Film Festival Report

Festaval De Cannes 2013

There have been some great films this year - but there have been some not so good and downright dire too... My highlights of this festival... Met the 'director' with the dubious soubriquet of worst film maker in the world... Saw the 4K re-mastered 3D version of The Last Emperor in the presence of the great director Bernardo Bertolucci who was in a wheelchair - and wearing his hat as always... Read more

Adele Cross: Exec Producer for The Daniel CONNECTION

When asked by Studio Scotland to come on board as Executive Producer for their new feature film, 'The Daniel CONNECTION', with attending Cannes Film Festival as my first obligation, it was a reasonably easy decision to make. I relished the opportunity to experience the famous festival from the inside. We are all familiar with the famous images of the stars walking up the red carpet and ascending the iconic steps and associate it with glamour, sunshine and fabulousness... Read more
